For my latest post on how to turn Clutter into Cash, I wanted to check out the options with regard to trading in used books for cash. Not to suggest that books are clutter, but I can see how easy it is to get to the point where there are more books than can fit in the bookcase. Here are a few popular books-for-cash sites to check out:
- Cash 4 Books: Just enter the ISBN number for your books, print out a shipping label and send off your books with postage paid shipping. You should have your money within a week. The most popular trade-in books are dated 2007 and newer. You can also sell textbooks.
- MyBookBuyer: Similar to Cash 4 Books, this site enables you to check the value of your books and offers free shipping. However, your order must be at least $10. You can get paid by PayPal or check, and the site claims you’ll receive your money within 3 business days of receiving your books.
- WeBuyYourBooks: This site takes all kinds of books, including fiction, non-fiction and textbooks. Here is a pretty good list of the categories of books they accept at the bottom of the page. While WeBuyYourBooks does not offer free shipping, you will get 100% of your postage charges refunded to you if your books are valued at $10 or more and you ship your books via USPS Media Mail.
I tried out each of the sites above with a book I had sitting here on my desk, “Save Big: Cut Your Top 5 Costs and Save Thousands.” The book was published in December 2009 with a cover price of $24.95 (the current Amazon price is $16.47). Here is the trade-in value at the above sites.
- Cash 4 Books: $4.89
- MyBookBuyer: $4.93
- WeBuyYourBooks: $5.68
If you’re interested in spending a little extra time and effort to sell your books, Amazon is another good way to go. As of this morning, there were seven used copies of this book available starting at $14.20. Amazon charges sellers a 15% commission fee on used books they sell plus a $.99 per-transaction fee and a $1.35 variable closing fee. Even with the fees, however, you can still earn nearly double in some cases by selling on Amazon.
This is the third post in my Clutter to Cash series. In case you missed my earlier posts, you can check out Trade in Your Old Gadgets and Video Game Trade-In Programs.
Have you had a chance to try out any of these services that offer cash for your used books? I’d love to hear about your experiences.
