“Disclosure: I tested out Walmart’s Online Grocery service mentioned in this post, and received grocery shopping funds from Walmart in order to do so.”
Wow, Wow, Wow. That’s all I have to say. When Walmart reached out and wanted me to post a review of their new grocery pickup service I have to admit.. I was the biggest skeptic in the whole entire universe. You see, Walmart in our town has never been my favorite place to spend free time. I love our smaller grocery store – I love the selection, I love the prices and I love the people. I can honestly say that I can state those very same words about the Walmart online grocery service.
Let me tell you all about how the Walmart grocery service works. First, you’ll sign into your Walmart Grocery account. You can make one for free here. Once you make your account, select your groceries. I absolutely loved (this might be my favorite part!) is that I could add facewash and eyeliner to my grocery order. Hello, what? Yes! I literally did not have to step foot in Walmart to get these things. And, the prices were right, too!
Although I love my local Fareway grocery store I am not a huge fan of HyVee, our other local grocery store. Walmart’s prices were comparable to Fareway’s sale prices. So, although I spent about the same amount of money on my groceries, I also was able to add those toiletries to my cart — I sincerely loved that.
Once you’ve made your account and added your items to your cart you’ll choose what time you want to pick up your groceries. This is my least favorite part, if I’m honest. I didn’t like that the only option for pickup was the following day. I usually let myself run so low on things that I have to go that day. But, the upside is that you can stick to a budget better as you’re not just adding things to your cart — and I like that.
Choose which time works best for you and submit your payment information.
Your pickup time will be a one hour window. When you’re ready to leave your house, simply check into the free Walmart grocery app (you can download that here) and let them know that you’re on your way. The app tracks you on your way so that when you pull into your spot they’re made aware that you’re there.
On this go around I had Angel delivering my groceries. Angel was so, so, so nice. I was on my phone when she came to my window and she made sure to not startle me by quietly getting my attention and promptly apologized for running behind. I had only been there two minutes, so I told her no big deal (it wasn’t and she was beyond kind!) Angel told me exactly how everything was going to go, how substitutions worked (if Walmart is out of an item they’ll sub it for something of better quality, brand name, etc.) and even gave me a newbie gift.
She then got straight to work loading my groceries. When she was done I sat in my car and soaked up this amazement for a good 30 seconds. I could not believe what had just happened. I felt like I just gained an extra 45 minutes of free time. Unbelievable. Walmart — hats off to you! This was amazing and I will be back!
One more thing, here are the directions you’ll get from Walmart upon your first order:
Pickup instructions
- Pick up is easy:

- Enter the parking lot and drive to the front of the store.
- Facing the entrance, go to the right side of the building. Look for the grocery pickup signs.
- Park in a designated spot. Your order will be out shortly.
