Creative Lunch Ideas for Picky Eaters + Save-A-Lot Gift Card Giveaway
As most of you know, I’ve got a little one heading off to Kindergarten in the Fall. I never seem to worry much about anything at the beginning of the year, other than if they’re getting their tummies full at breakfast and lunchtime to get them through the day so they can learn. If you have a picky eater, this can be tough especially considering that hot lunch only offers a few items to choose from. So finding creative cold lunch ideas for picky eaters is important.
Recently Save-A-Lot reached out to me and asked if I could come up with a way to make lunches fun for picky eaters and offer ways to save on packing lunches. And, I am so happy to work on a project like this because I too struggle with neat lunch ideas.
I headed out to the Save-A-Lot location nearest me in Des Moines, Iowa and was ready to see what they had to offer. I was so impressed with the selection and the prices. If you’re not familiar with this store find your nearest Save-A-Lot location here.
I was most impressed with their lunch packaging. They had three packs of containers perfectly sized for fruit ready to go and the prices were unbeatable for the selection there was. And the staff at my local store was so incredibly helpful and nice!

And, the prices were awesome on everything from fruit to yogurt, to crackers as well. I was able to make an entire lunch for less than $1 – and it will be way healthier than hot lunch, too!

Here’s what I used to make this lunch for picky eaters:
- Ham
- Turkey
- Cheese sticks
- Banana
- Peanut butter crackers
- Yogurt
- Bamboo sticks
As you can see, I used the bamboo sticks to make deli sandwiches without the bread. Our son doesn’t love bread, so this is a great way to make sure he gets some protein and dairy without the bread. And, it’s way more fun than a sandwich, am.I.right?

Save-A-Lot also had these small containers, the perfect size for some sliced bananas. I loved including the slices of banana instead of a full banana, full unpeeled bananas get so bruised and they’re ugly by the time lunchtime arrives so the kids never want to eat them.
And, that little container fit snug in another larger size container, making this lunch easy to make and easy on the budget as well.
