Every time I try to “modernize” my kitchen routine, I end up going back to the basics, the things that I know work. With grocery prices going up and my family still reverting back to the idea that the dishwasher loads itself, I’ve leaned hard into these old-school kitchen habits recently. And guess what? They still work. Like, really well.

So here are 29 classic kitchen tips that deserve a place in your everyday routine. Some will save money, some will save sanity and some might make you feel put together, even if your dog Gigi is licking crumbs off the floor behind you.

1. Keep a Jar of Bacon Grease

That little jar of bacon grease in the fridge? Gold. That is perfect for sautéing veggies, frying eggs, or giving some smokiness to potatoes. It is basically free flavor, and with how expensive groceries are, I'm definitely not letting that go to waste.

My grandma did this, my mom did this, and now I do this, even if it horrifies my teens. At least they eat everything I cook with it. Jokes on them.

2. Add a Pinch of Salt to Sweet Dishes

Although this may sound fancy, it really comes from old-school thinking. A small pinch of salt helps the sweetness in baked goods and desserts. It makes for a better and more “finished” overall flavor experience.

I've been doing this for years, and now it feels like I can't stop. Even the chocolate chip cookies seem like they came from a bakery, not my messy kitchen.

3. Soak Pots and Pans Right Away

You don't have to let food get as hard as stone! Just fill the pan with warm water right away! It gets everything un-stuck and saves you from having to scrub so hard that you'd think you'd signed up for a fitness contest!

Do I always remember to do so? No. Do I regret it every single time I don't? Absolutely.

4. Use Vinegar for Cleaning

Long before you had 47 options of spray cleaners, there was vinegar. It cuts through grease, removes smells, and leaves your kitchen shining clean without a chemical odor.

I always keep a spray bottle under the sink. It is inexpensive, works well, and gives me the illusion that I am organized, even if that isn't quite the case.

5. Store Herbs in Water Like Flowers

Herbs can stay fresh for a longer period when stored like a bouquet. To do this, cut the stems, place them in a cup of water, and cover them loosely with a plastic bag.

I don’t like to admit how many sad, wilted bunches of cilantro have almost ended up in the trash.

6. Always Preheat Your Oven

While it may seem basic, it is very important. Baking and even roasting relies on even heat throughout the cooking process. If you skip this step it can negatively impact the finishing texture, and cooking time.

I used to rush this step. Then I started to realize that my cookies were playing a game of 'will they or won't they.' Lesson learned.

7. Use Ice Water for Crisp Veggies

If your carrots or lettuce are looking a bit sad, try soaking them in ice water. It's like a little spa day for them!

I swear it’s kitchen magic. Your salad looks like it was purchased just five minutes ago.

8. Peel Garlic by Crushing It

Smashing the garlic cloves with the side of a chef's knife will loosen the skin. No fuss, no muss.

I can be in pajamas and still feel like a master chef when I make this one.

9. Keep a Running Grocery List

Outdated maybe, but definitely still useful. Keep a list on the fridge and jot stuff down as you run out.

That avoids the classic “I thought YOU bought milk” situation, where someone ends up eating dry cereal and then looks at me to blame me.

10. Save Vegetable Scraps for Broth

Put chopped onion ends, peeled carrots, and tops of celery in a freezer bag and use them to make broth later.

It feels very resourceful, and it’s practically free soup starter.

11. Use Lemon to Brighten Flavors

Almost any dish can benefit from a squeeze of lemon. Soups, vegetables and chicken, whatever it is.

I didn't appreciate this trick until I got older, and now I use it so much I feel like I'm on some kind of cooking show.

12. Dry Meat Before Cooking

Drying off the meat beforehand promotes better browning. To achieve that golden, crispy crust, moisture must be eliminated.

It may be a small step but it shows that you know what you are doing.

13. Keep Butter Soft in a Dish

A butter dish on the counter makes butter stay spreadable and easy to grab.

Stop ripping the bread into pieces just because the butter is like a brick.

14. Use Wooden Spoons to Prevent Boil-Overs

To avoid boiling water from spilling over, put a wooden spoon across the pot.

It’s straightforward, somewhat odd, and almost sounds like something a wise aunt would advise you to do.

15. Clean as You Go

Washing dishes as you cook makes the task easier—and is the habit I struggle with the most!

You will thank yourself in the future. You will complain about this the whole time.

16. Taste as You Cook

Seasoning is a process, not a final step. Adjust as you taste.

Here's how to not serve something that will taste like pure regret.

17. Use Baking Soda for Odors

Baking soda absorbs odors from your fridge, trash can, and even cutting boards.

It’s better than acting like you don’t smell something strange, and it’s cheap and easy!

18. Let Meat Rest Before Cutting

After cooking, let meat rest for a few minutes. This allows the juices to redistribute back into the meat rather than run all over your cutting board.

I used to skip this step, but now I know better, and it makes my steaks a lot better.

19. Freeze Leftover Bread

To avoid bread going stale, freeze it and just take out slices to toast as needed.

Additionally it saves your money and keeps you from feeling guilty every time you have to throw out half a loaf.

20. Use Salt to Clean Cast Iron

You can skip soap and scrubbing, cast iron can be cleaned using salt and a little oil.

It keeps the pan working like new and smelling great–just like it should.

21. Keep Knives Sharp

With a sharp knife you can be safer and more effective than if you were using a dull knife.

Additionally, chopping becomes oddly satisfying instead of feeling somewhat dangerous.

22. Store Onions in a Cool, Dry Place

Onions will have a longer shelf life if they are stored away from moisture and sunlight.

Not in a plastic bag and shoved into a random corner… I am speaking from experience.

23. Use Leftovers Creatively

Make different meals with leftovers like soups, casseroles or sandwiches!

Here are ways you can expand your grocery budget while not getting bored with your meals.

24. Add Pasta Water to Sauce

The water rich in starch assists the sauce in adhering to the pasta more effectively.

It's a small step that makes a big difference – and feels a bit fancy.

25. Keep a Well-Stocked Pantry

Having basic staples allows you to piece together a meal whenever you want.

I can't count how many times this has saved dinner at my home.

26. Use a Damp Cloth Under Cutting Boards

Reduces the risk of slipping while chopping

It’s a no fuss solution and one that is very effective. It gives the impression that you are organized.

27. Don’t Overcrowd the Pan

Give food room to cook properly. Overcrowding results in steaming instead of browning.

I have trouble doing this because of my impatience; however, this is important.

28. Label and Date Food

Understand what you posses and the time you created it.

This solves the problem of "what is this?" mystery container situations.

29. Cook with Love (Yes, Really)

It might sound cliche but it shows in the final dish when you take your time and care about what you are making.

Even if your kitchen is crazy, noisy, and a little disorganized (hey, it’s me), it still produces great meals.

Ultimately, saving time and money by using these vintage tips isn’t the most important thing. Finding ways to simplify life is most important, and ancient kitchen advice can do that. Getting dinner on the table without losing my mind (or having to order takeout again) is also a win in my book.
