Sure, I don't remember the exact time it happened, but sometime between my morning school lunch packing ritual and the good old days of my children being babies, I noticed a change. Age didn't just mean a pair of knees that creaked, or an irrational obsession with decorative pillows, it was… liberating. Quite surprisingly so.

I know “getting older” has a bad rep. Wrinkles, gray hairs, and joints that crack when you stand up certainly sound like a whole thing. But what people don't talk about nearly enough is how much *lighter* life can sometimes feel. Less stress. Fewer expectations. A whole lot more of “I’m just going to do what works for me.”

I've compiled a list of 31 reasons why I think getting older is not as bad as people say. I wish I knew this information sooner so I could relieve myself from worry about getting older, but I’m glad I compiled this list, because one day our daughter can read it and realize why I seemed to “be so bossy”.

(Ha!)

1. You Stop Caring What Everyone Thinks

I would have paid just to have my name in the credits. I used to mentally replay conversations like I was scouting NFL game film. Now? If it weren't such a huge social faux pa, I'd take a move on like a game of hot potato. Most folks are too caught up in their own heads to think about anything else.

2. You Finally Know Yourself

Let's be honest it's time consuming to truly figure out what you like but more importantly what you don’t like just because society expects you to. Personally I don't have to act as if I enjoy detailed recipes or busy restaurants. I enjoy more relaxed environments where I don't have to stress over food or be in a noisy restaurant. Understanding that it's ok to be different from others is also a form of growth.

3. Saying No Becomes Easy

Saying “I can’t” or “I don’t want to” doesn’t come with a long explanation or feelings of guilt. Once you try it, you will see how freeing it is. I personally recommend you try it once a week.

4. You Value Your Time More

You realize your time is limited, so you stop wasting it on things that are a drain like people, obligations, and yes do’s even folding fitted sheets properly.

5. You Care Less About Trends

If it’s too much effort, overpriced, or uncomfortable, I’m gone. I’ve hit a point where classic and comfy always win. No one can change my mind.

6. Your Confidence Grows Naturally

It’s not boastful or flashy—it’s reliable. You’ve been through enough to believe in yourself, and that sort of assurance doesn’t require approval.

7. You Appreciate the Little Things

A clean kitchen, a good cup of coffee and a quiet house, start to feel like luxury. And honestly, they kind of are!

8. You Let Go of Perfection

Perfection is not the goal. Life is complicated, and that is perfectly fine. Relieving yourself of that pressure makes things feel much more simple.

9. Your Circle Gets Smaller (and Better)

You stop dealing with drama and begin to pay attention to the people that actually support you. Less relationships, but stronger ones.

10. You Stop Comparing Yourself

Hopefully, you can look past comparison and instead recognize that everyone is on their own journey. Even if social media looks convincing, it isn't real life.

11. You Embrace Comfort

I will not spend time on anything that isn't comfortable. I will not spend time on shoes, clothes, furniture, or anything. Life is too short for jeans that are uncomfortable.

12. You Trust Your Instincts

What about that tiny voice in your head? It’s often correct. And after years of self-doubt, you begin to trust it.

13. You Don’t Need Approval

You know what works for you. Stop looking for validation.

14. You Laugh More

What used to stress you out, you now just laugh at. Sometimes it’s funny, and sometimes you just laugh because there’s nothing else to do.

15. You’re More Financially Aware

You begin to make more intentional choices with your money. Not perfect. But good.

16. You Let Things Go Faster

Keeping a grudge takes effort and I really don’t want to spend that time. It is far more simple to just let it go.

17. You Enjoy Your Own Company

This one is huge. I like that we can unwind without constant plans to be made and more noise. A quiet evening spent at home sounds great.

18. You Focus on What Matters

The little things become less important. You focus on what really counts: family, health, and mental well-being.

19. You Accept Your Body

Though it may not look the same as it did twenty years ago, it has been with you through a lot and that deserves some appreciation.

20. You Stop Over-Explaining

You don’t owe it to anyone to explain your decisions. “Because I said so” now applies to you.

21. You Sleep Better (When You Actually Get Sleep)

However, when you finally get some sleep, you appreciate it a lot more.

22. You Care Less About “Stuff”

As time goes by, material things become less appealing. What you remember, reflect upon, and experience become far more important.

23. You’re More Selective with Energy

You have the choice of how and where you spend your energy and you possess the ability to protect that energy. Don't waste it by giving it away.

24. You Stop Trying to Fix Everything

It is very freeing to know not all problems need to be solved by you.

25. You Appreciate Real Conversations

You get tired of pointless conversation. More important relationships start to take priority.

26. You Let Yourself Rest

You do not need to earn rest, it is something that you need and deserve.

27. You Accept Change More Easily

Life is always changing, and posi-tive things can come from those changes. It is better to just learn how to adapt rather than fighting the change.

28. You Find Joy in Simplicity

Moments become a lot more meaningful when there is less chaos in the world around you, and more calm.

29. You Speak Your Mind

I appreciate your honesty. You don't seem to hold back as much, and that's nice.

30. You Realize You’re Stronger Than You Thought

Remembering what you’ve dealt with gives you the strength to face what’s next.

31. You Finally Feel… Free

No expectations. No pressure. No need to prove anything. You’ve earned this phase in your life and it’s actually pretty awesome.

People often talk about how aging comes with a number of disadvantages. However, the aging process comes with a type of freedom that often goes unspoken about. This is the type of freedom that you will experience and never trade for anything, including having skin that is free of wrinkles.
