For many of us, summer comes and goes pretty quickly. I feel like this summer has vanished before our eyes and soon we’ll be running around like crazy people preparing for early mornings, compacted weekends and … homework. That’s why we’re relishing in every last minute of the summer that we can playing baseball, taking lawn mower rides and just doing outside like it should be done.
I was amazed when I came upon these facts while doing a short google search on kids and outdoor time:
- A generation ago 75% of American kids played outside daily; nowadays, only 25% do (ref: NRPA)
- Children are spending half as much time outdoors as they did 20 years ago. (ref: Juster et al 2004)
- Today, kids 8-18 years old devote an average of 7 hours and 38minutes using entertainment media in a typical day (more than 53hours a week) (ref: Kaiser Family Foundation)
- In a typical week, only 6% of children ages 9-13 play outside on their own. (ref: Children & Nature Network, 2008)
- And the most surprising and mind blowing to me: Prisoners at a maximum security facility in the U.S. are guaranteed 2hours of outdoor time daily, whereas 1 out of 2 kids worldwide spendsless than an hour outside. (ref: www.treehugger.com)
We know that children who play outside are more physically active, more creative in their play, less aggressive and show better concentration. As a mom of two kids this is so important to our relationships and vital in what needs to get done at home, on the fields and in the classrooms.
This summer, TruGreen is encouraging us to spend more time outside creating memories with loved ones and experiencing the joys of nature and the outdoors. With this in mind, TruGreen launched the #LiveLifeOutside 2016 Summer Sweepstakes! During this sweepstakes they’re daring us to love life outside by sharing photos and videos for a chance to win weekly prizes. SWEET!
Join me in entering the sweepstakes here – be sure to use the hashtag #LiveLifeOutside to show how you’re living life outside these last few weeks of summer. Head here to find out more about TruGreen.
