My oldest daughter is nearly seven and we only just got the Wii this past Christmas, so I don’t have loads of experience with video games. I do know, however, that February video game sales dropped 15 percent year-over-year. So, I have to wonder, are more people trading video games? Are people just putting an end to game-playing ways altogether in this economy? I imagine it is a not a cheap hobby. Hmm…
Well, if you’re one of those who has slowed down on gaming and has found yourself with a bunch of games you no longer play, here are three trade-in programs you may want to check out to turn your used video games into cash, gift cards or store credit.
Amazon
Amazon now has a Video Games Trade-In section on their web site. You simply search for the game you want trade-in (all games must be in good working condition), then print out a shipping label and upon receipt of the game(s) an Amazon gift card will be deposited to your account. Quick note that you can trade in DVDs and textbooks for Amazon gift cards as well. You can check out FAQs on the program here.
GameStop
You can trade in old video games and gaming systems at your local GameStop store for store credit. Stop by before Wednesday (3/17) to take advantage of a promotion that entitles you to an extra 50% credit. So if your video game had a trade-in value of $20, you’ll receive $30 instead, but only through Wednesday.
If you decide to do your trade-in at GameStop before 3/17, be sure to print out the page on their web site that notes the promotion was extended to Wednesday. The clerk at the store I visited was not aware it was still going on.
You can also get cash for trade-ins at GameStop. Unfortunately, GameStop will deduct 20 percent from the value of your game because you are not re-spending the money in their store. You also cannot take advantage of the extra 50% promotion if you opt to take your trade-in value as cash.
Toys R Us
In September, Toys R Us rolled out a nationwide video game trade-in program. Simply bring your used video games to the customer service desk and receive a gift card for the trade-in value. Gift cards can be used at Toys R Us, Babies R Us or only at ToysRUs.com.
Alternatively, you can go online to the Toys R Us Video Game Trade-In Center. There is free shipping on games valued at $10 or more and you’ll receive a gift card by mail for your game(s). You’ll find the “Top 10 Most Wanted” on the web site as well.
I did a quick comparison of trade-in values for three popular games and here’s what I found for today. I also include in parentheses the price you’d pay for the game as new from each retailer. Quick note that the GameStop trade-in values below do not include the extra 50% through the current promotion.
Dante’s Inferno (Xbox 360)
- Amazon: $42 (new: $49.99)
- GameStop: $25 (new: $59.99)
- Toys R Us: $32.50 (new: $59.99)
G-Force (Nintendo DS)
- Amazon: $5.50 (new: $19.96)
- GameStop: $5.50 (new: $19.99)
- Toys R Us: $5.80 (new: $19.99)
New Super Mario Bros. Wii (Wii)
- Amazon: $37.50 (new: $45.54)
- GameStop: $25 (new: $49.99)
- Toys R Us: $20 (new: $49.99)
As you can see, it definitely pays to shop around to get the best trade-in values. While I stopped by the GameStop in person, you should be able to get trade-in values over the phone.

Coming Up on Thursday: Sell Used Books for Cash. There are a variety of programs today that will give you cash for your old books and textbooks. I’ll share these programs with you.
