This year, 16 states will offer tax-free holidays to help shoppers save on back-to-school supplies, clothing and electronics. Many of these states will host their tax-free days this weekend, including Virginia, Missouri and Illinois. Consumer Reports has a full list of participating states and details.
Want to make the most of your tax-free holiday? Take a look at these tips to help maximize your back-to-school savings.
- Make a List: Don’t fall into the trap of buying items just because they’re tax-free. Make a list of the specific items you need for back-to-school (e.g., socks, jeans, #2 pencils, etc.) and stick to it.
- Shop Early: Tax-free holidays are very busy shopping days. To make sure you get what you need and to avoid some of the crowds, shop early, like right when the stores open.
- Know the Details: Each state makes their own rules for which items are tax-free. Often there are limits as to how much the item costs or what types of items are exempt. Know the limitations before you hit the stores.
