8 Tips on Getting Organized at Home and Staying Organized
Being organized at home relieves so much stress on the family, on your day and especially on the to-do list. When the to-do list gets too long, even the smallest things start to add up and begin to seem like a great big deal, when that wasn’t intended to be the case.
Take just a few precautionary steps to getting organized at home and stay organized. These 8 tips will help.
1. Find out what organization means to you.
For some people, the beginning of getting organized starts with making their bed everyday and for others, it means having a clean car. It’s not a one size fits all situation, so think about what is going to work for you. And, don’t think that what meets the eye is the most important thing. Organization should be functional, too so contemplate what being organized looks like to you.
2. How much does being organized mean to you?
Thinking about your “why” is very important in anything meaningful you do. Is your “why” to make sure the kids get to the right activities on the correct day and on time? Or maybe your “why” is that you want to be able to enjoy an extra cup of coffee in the morning, so having an organized closet where you can find things easier is important to you. Determining your “why” will help you stay in the game.
3. Set some parameters.
We’re all human, and we all procrastinate at times, especially for things we’re dreading doing. Therefore, setting deadlines can give you some real, hard and steadfast goals as to when you’d like to have things done by. Get your pen and paper ready to get your projects and goals written down.
4. Bring your boombox (or iPod)
Create a playlist of fun and energetic music that will get you moving. This will keep you motivated.. and for some it helps mentally… for example, thinking to yourself “I want to get ‘xyz’ done before the end of this song.
5. Purge, purge, purge.
I am a keeper. I love to keep momentos that remind me of special times. Probably the worst habit to have if you’re trying to get organized, I’d say. Get ready to get rid of things and make rom for free space. The more free space, the more organized you’ll feel. And, it’s important to do this monthly. Set a spot for things to toss or donate and mark a time on your monthly calendar to get it to the right spot. Either the landfill or your local Goodwill.
6. A little bit a day goes a long way.
Doing 15 minutes of cleaning and organizing a day goes a long way and keeps you from having to spend 3 hours of your weekend working when you’d rather be playing.
7. Choose carefully.
Just because that shelf is free or that picture frame is a great deal, that doesn’t mean that it needs to belong to you. Because if it don’t get used, it’s going to end up being more clutter in your home and will keep your from staying organized.
8. Celebrate good times.
So you organized that file drawer, or the desktop, or that pesky lazy susan that could suck you in… celebrate your accomplishments as that’s a great deal. Reward yourself however you like to do that.
