Thermal Spa Shellac Nail Light 63% Off (& How To Do Your Own Gel/Shellac Manicure!)

I have this Shellac nail light and I love it!  In an effort to save time (& money!) I do my own gel polish/Shellac manicures at home because I can do them quick after the kiddos are in bed or during their nap without leaving the house. All in all it takes about 20 minutes or so to do.  Shellac is a brand name, it's really called a gel manicure but I use the term Shellac throughout this post since that's the name people are most familiar with.

Here are the steps to take to do your own Shellac manicure at home:

  • Remove all nail polish
  • Push back cuticles, file nails and buff if necessary
  • Wash hands, and dry well
  • Put on PH Bond (I use this) & put under light for 2 minutes
  • Put on the Foundation (I use this) & put under light for 2 minutes
  • Put on your color (I have this color on right now and it's a nice winter color) &           put under light for 2 minutes (repeat 1 time for 2 coats of color total)
  • Put on the Top Coat (I use this) & put under light for 2 minutes
  • Rub polish with a cotton ball soaked in alcohol (I use Target brand) to remove           the sticky feel
  • To remove your shellac nail polish soak your fingers in a smal bowl of acetone           for 10 minutes or so and the polish will easily peel off without hurting             your fingernails.

Your nails will be dry right away and your polish should stay on for about 2 weeks!

** The top coat "seals" on your Shellac so make sure to get your top coat around the edges of your color without touching your cuticles.

Where I live a Shellac manicure costs about $35 + tip so I figure I have saved tons of money doing my manicures myself and I highly recommend this if you're artistic at all.  Keep in mind this total package that I have outlined above will cost about $105, but after 3 manicures, you're ahead!  To give you an idea, I have never had to replace any of my polishes and have done about 7 manicures on myself and have plenty left to do many more!

That's all there is to it!

Good Luck!

Sounds great! After kids, you just don't have time to get your nails done all the time. :) The only thing I'm worked about with that light though is the uv light it gives off they have been recent reports regarding people developing skin cancer on theor fingers and toes after using the uv lights in nail salons.

I have thin nails that tend to "give" a little. This flexing usually breaks nail polish. Do your do that? Also, does it seem like this makes your nails any stronger with the gel on rather than off?

      Hi Amy,

Mine are the same way, which is why I love having gel polish on. I used to get acrylic nails done but when I had kids my hands were always in the water and the nails would lift (and finding a couple hours out of the house proved difficult!). My hands are always still in the water and don't lift a bit. That also tore apart my nails and made them so thin.

I would totally recommend shellac without a doubt!

      I hope this helps!

      Hi Gail!

I am so glad you got it - you'll love it! What helps too is if you really are not getting it, go to a school and get it done there and ask question after question... why, why, why... that way you learn they way they did!

      Good Luck!

I'd love to hear what you think of it!

I applied it today after literally spending hours trying to soak off my gel nails....I just hope when I want to change colors or redo I don't have to soak all day...I saw where you sd 10 min or so, but the salons also say that....It went on good, but I can tell it will take a few practices to perfect it...

          Hi Gail,

Yes, practice makes perfect! I will say that my first time was not perfect or close to... but I knew that going in, after all, people go through a lot of hours at school to learn how to do it and I had no training. : )

Mine do come off very quickly!

After two weeks mine will begin to lift around the cuticles as well so they peel off very easily without hurting the nails too if I don't want to soak them.

          Whichever works for you!

          Good Luck & Happy Holidays!
