Quit complaining or quit your job. Dont you people ever think your attitude and service affects your tip amount. maybe you shouldnt be so angry when you dont get a tip for one table which in the long run will ruin your chances for the next table because of your damn attitude. I always tip 20% for my total amount when i go to dinner with my wife and kids, but its never gonna be good enough for some people, stop being so upset or find a different job.

I agree w/Anonymous. I normally give 18% to 20% of my bill for a tip. But you have to make sure you give each table of customers your best service or lets face it…You aren’t worth a big tip and if your attitude ruins someones evening, because you are being a jerk then you aren’t going to get a tip from them. That kind of attitude just keeps escalating down….I base my tip on a servers attitude, whether they come back and pick up my plates that we are done with so that I have room at my table, makes sure my drinks are filled at all times and that they are courteous to not only me, but the people around me.

I am a server, and I agree with the other servers that have posted, that customers need to pay for there service and give a decent tip, if you can't afford to tip your server then don't go out, or go to a place you can afford like burger king. I have worked in the food industry for over ten years as a server. The people who have posted about not liking your job then quit, it is because of people like you that we don't care for our job, and if it weren't for servers then you wouldn't have a place to go out and eat. I like my job because I like interacting with different people, but I don't like it when I give good service and they can't leave at least 15%. They think that 10% is still acceptable, news flash this isn't the 1980's, 10% is not acceptable this day and age, and if you blame it on the economy, then don't go out to places you can't afford.

Gratuity, tips… call it what you will: its basically a VOLUNTARY reward for good service. If it weren’t for COOKS and BUSINESS MANAGERS and FRANCHISE OWNERS we wouldn’t have a place to eat – almost anyone can adapt to smile, talk and carry a plate of food.
A good server doesn’t choke out customers, drop plates or spill drinks and knows when to say “hello”, “goodbye” and “do you need anything else”..
All a server needs to is be nice and be competent so as to not lose their job, drive away customers or not get tipped.
If you DO get tipped, its whatever the customer chooses – be happy and satisfied with that, otherwise quit complaining or quit your job, simple as that.

And this is why there shouldn't be any tipping at all. Servers (this goes for hair stylists, as well) should get paid a standard, up-front wage. The reward for good service should be that you stand a better chance of keeping your job. Maybe, if you're so good that customers tell your supervisor (or your supervisor just notices over the course of your employment), you'll get a raise. If you perform poorly, you should get fired, and someone else should get a chance to do your job well. If the customer likes the service, then they'll come back for more; if not, they'll go somewhere else. (Gee, this sounds a lot like MY job!) Simple. No awkward 'how much of a tip should I leave?'…no b****ing on web boards. And, yes, if you don't feel your wage is sufficient for the work you perform, you are always free to look for another job. Doesn't get any fairer than that.

wow, comment after comment of cheap F***s. What does "there doesn't need to be any tipping jobs" have to do with anything on this forum. The fact is there are tipping jobs and that's reality. And performing the bare minimum should bring 15%. Anyone who says different is a total idiot and cheap bast**d. To think a server should have to do anything besides bring your food and drink to you to get 15% is outrageous and just goes to show how chickin sh*t ppl really are. When I go out to eat I always factor in 15% into the cost and if I get exceptional service I pay more than 15%. And to the guy talking about giving 5 bucks on a 200 dollar ticket you are obviously the ethnic group I was talking about earlier. Thanks for showing up on this board because you do exist and you just proved it. Servers, I am sorry there are so many losers out there that would just as soon spit on u as pay for the service you provide. All I can do is try to call these f*gs out for being f*gs and hopefully enough people will realize what douches they are and stop stiffing servers because they didn't find the cure for aids during their dinner sitting.

It not about being cheap, its hard earned money for everyone.
When you go to Best Buy and pay $100 for a TV, do you give $15-25 to the guy/girl that brings it out? To the cashier? Do you give bus operators extra $ for driving you safely – or 15% of that day’s pay to a fire-fighter for saving your car?
Get over yourself – the industry has gotten used to it, but its way out of hand.
Its not about being cheap, it about you taken what you get and be thankful you got it…
Stop complaining or quit your job – there’s 50000 people ready to take your place…
…think about how much of a “tip” you should give a doctor next time you should (hopefully not ever) land in an ER..

To the last person who posted; what is this going to accomplish? Cussing people out and claiming that servers should always get 15% is crap. I was a waitress at a local shop, as yes it does bite to get a dollar when the bill was 30- and yes I felt cheated quite often. But this doesn't always happen, and referring to an entire group of people that are ethnic or use coupons as such only proves you are as ignorant as they are.

I do believe in the 18% standard, and generally when we have a coupon we tend to give more. However, I have given far less in cases like when I visited O'Charleys on a Tuesday night; our server took 20 minutes to take our order, never filled our drinks, wasn't the one to bring out our order, never brought the rolls I asked for- instead I stopped another server, he knocked the drink over on the rolls (a new cup I finally asked the same guy that brought our rolls) didn't offer to replace the soaked ones and offered no apology or care that he did so and forgot my box after we sat another fifteen minutes waiting for the check. I would have easily given the tip to the server that covered his ass; but he deserved nothing more than I would have gotten at my old job; fired.

Yes there are cheap people; yes there are bad servers. If you don't like either, do something about it. Cussing one another will not solve a thing, it will only make you look like a child with a temper.

Coupon is expired, by the way.

Wow. I'm sad I got a TGI Friday's gift card at all. I may never use it. They obviously hire big time babies.

Times are tough for everyone. Get real, people. There's nothing wrong with coupon clipping, and there's nothing wrong with tipping less for poor service. Give great service and you'll be rewarded more times than not. That's the same in any industry. It's better to have the customer there – you have an opportunity to wow them and take home some serious cash.

First of all its not our business what the irs expects from you and if the restaurant assumes you get a tip and post that on your w-2 get together and fight it. If you don't receive it from the customers make your employer pay it if they are going to report it to the irs. you guys should be glad people are still eating out or we could add you to the employment rate. i will be at fridays tomorrow and hope the service is good since you all dont seem to like your jobs.

"""WOW""" My friend and I were going to celebrate our birthdays this weekend with a large party eating with us. I just came here to see if there were any extra deals we could get and WOW, look at all the disgruntled servers. I am shocked to say the least of how horrible the servers are talking about the customers/employers. If its so true that the servers are only making their wages through the customers, then the customers are their employers in a sence. You servers are cutting your employers down and DONT deserve your jobs at all. I am changing where my birthday party dinner will be. I dont want my food "SPIT" on by disgruntled servers. There are too many people looking for a job and are happy with what ever they get to put up with servers like TGIF's servers. You guys changed the way I look at TGIF. I will never go there to eat again! By the way, if I get great service I tip about 30% if I get bad service, that percentage goes down.

"For all you waiters and waitresses complaining about tips, I guess you should've paid more attention in school… then maybe your life wouldn't suck so much… stop complaining and get a life. No one OWES you a tip, if you don't like minimum wage, try6 your local coimmunity college and work on some skills- it won't get any easier (or wait, you might become asst manager)… LOL"

WTF is that CRAP? As already said multiple times on this board, some of us DID graduate college, but are having trouble finding and maintaining a college-level job in this economy. E.g., I got laid off from my full-time job 1yr ago. Aside from the occasional temp job, the only other work I can find is retail and restaurant work, and I work at both of these right now as I try to pursue an entirely new, hopefully more recession-resistent career path. >:(

You know what I really HATE? Cheap customers who are hypocritical. For example, the other day, I waited on a couple that had a terrible attitude from the start, despite my super bubbling, overly cheerful demeanor that I have as a server. I did my very best to try and make their experience an enjoyable one, meanwhile she had a terrible attitude and got caught by management trying to break an alcohol law(gave her cocktail to her underage friend), and then the stupid b*tch decided to not tip me. It didn't take a rocket scientist to know that I was getting stiffed when the bill was $36.05, she gave me two $20s, glared at me(as she'd been doing the whole meal), and demanded change. I KNEW I wasn't going to get tipped. Now normally, I will round up the change to the next dollar for the customer's benefit. So in most cases, I would have given the customer $4 back instead of $3.95(which involves a tedious amount of change), just to make it easier for her. But for her, I made sure I gave her EXACT change and ABSOLUTELY NOTHING MORE. Not even $0.05 more. I was thinking, LOOK STUPID BITCH, I CAN BE CHEAP TOO. IF YOU'RE NOT GOING TO TIP ME AS YOUR WAITRESS, I'M DEFINITELY NOT GOING TO TIP *YOU* THE GLARING CUSTOMER. NOT EVEN $0.05, EVEN IF IT SAVES ME THE HASSLE. IT'S THE PRINCIPLE OF IT, HUN.

And yes, it's ANGERING to think that I essentially "paid money to wait on that bitch", since I'm obligated to pay taxes on an assumed amount of tip money I didn't actually make. I'm already outraged at the wasteful way our gov't is spending money on prodigal corp bailouts and welfare fraud, so the LAST thing I want to do is pay even MORE than my honest fair share. Talk about double whammy – first I pay to deal with Turbo Bitch, then I pay (more than my fair share) taxes to cover Turbo Jerk corporations.

What a stupid bitch. I hope I never have to wait on her again. But I do hope I run into her outside of work, so I can be rudely passive aggressive and unsmiley to her, so she'll know how it feels. >:(

Another thing. Maybe so many of us wouldn't be "disgruntled" servers if the customers weren't so mean to us. For example, me. I'm the same girl who wrote the comment immediately preceding this one. I am THE most smiley, cheerful waitress at work. I would NEVER spit in someone's food, because that's a big health hazard and just plain gross, plus I'd get fired. When I'm annoyed at a customer or having a bad day, I keep all those emotions locked deep down inside of me and still act happy. I wait until I'm HOME and on my computer to unleash my bitterness.

REALITY CHECK – Just because we rant on this site, doesn't mean we're "crabby servers". Some of us do a terrific job feigning happiness for the sake of professionalism and providing good service.

If anything, I wonder if my being TOO cheery could explain why some customers stiff me. Maybe hardhead/gangsta/"tough guy/girl" type of customers find my cheeriness to be annoying as opposed to contagious? Maybe they see my perpetual happy subservience as a sign of naivety, dorkiness, and foolishness? Or maybe they perceive my overhumbleness as implying that I'm "beneath" them, therefore leading them to treat and tip me as if I am in fact beneath them as a person? Hmmm I'd never be RUDE to a customer, but maybe I should act more cool/aloof instead of being so totally nice? It's really sad that I have to come to these grim conclusions…what a sick sad world we live in…

NO, MAYBE *YOU* THE CUSTOMER SHOULD HAVE PAID BETTER ATTENTION IN SCHOOL, PARTICULARLY IN MATH CLASS…AND LEARN HOW TO PROPERLY CALCULATE A TIP!! It amazes me to hear even close friends admit that they tipped only $4 on a $40 meal because they had no idea how to calculate 20% of the tab, so they blindly, randomly guessed any number to tip. Also, many of us servers ARE educated – going to college and/or trying really hard to find a job in the field we went to college for, but with no luck in this dismal economy. Hmmmmm who's the uneducated one now??

I am a college student and i work at a restaurant that pays 2.13 to its servers. I dont really complain about tips because I usually get compensated pretty well. Every once in a while I will get someone that tips me $2.00 on a $50.00 or more bill. It isnt because my service was bad because I really care about the customer and we also have specific regulations that require us to make sure the customer is pleased. There are just some cheap people out there. They come to the restaurant knowing they can only spend a certain amount and they end up ordering right under the amount. And to Kimberlyp1964 you need to understand that we dont cook the food. At our restaurant one person cooks it, another puts it together, and we bring it no if, ands or buts. If you have a problem with the food, talk to the manager because honestly the cook will do it again if they dont get in trouble. Blaming the server for the kitchen's mistakes might get your worse service, i know alot of people that do it. I could understand your frustration but dont shoot the messanger. Ask the manager for a discount since your food was wrong, dont reduce our tip.

I work as a server and have for four years. The fact is I have the restaurant putting so many rules on me, requiring us to sell, sell, sell, then we have to ensure the guest is perfectly happy, plus we are required to tip out. The last six shifts I worked I made less than $20.00 four of them. We don't make the kind of money you think we do. I can hardly survive but the fact is there are not many jobs out there. I am desperate for shifts and am a perfect employee but because of the economy the restaurant has me by the balls. I have to be entirely perfect, or they will look in their stack of 100 applications they get a month. I am so pressured and get no job security. No paid days off, no extra pay on Thanksgiving. Servers work very hard and have to guess the guest's every mood. I am very good at my job but I can't afford to live either. If you can't afford to tip- do not walk into a restaurant please. When someone leaves me nothing after a 50 dollar tab in which I've given perfect service and everything was perfect then how do you expect me to feel to have to tip the bar and busser 2 dollars from my own pocket- plus tell the IRS I made $5 I never made? That is what really happens.

^ Yes, and that is why I’m QUITTING Fridays TODAY. I am an experienced server who is always nice and sweet but constantly gets stiffed, too. Plus, the way they partition tables to the servers is inconsistent. Last Monday, I was there 5.5 hours and made only $11 in tips…with my measly $2.83/hr, that comes to less than fed min wage. I had only 3 tables and go figure, 2 of the 3 gave less than 7% tip even though I made sure I gave them A+ service.

At my very next day of work, managers had an important meeting with us, telling us that we would get written up if we didn’t claim our tips to be at least 10% of our sales. So that means on top of only making a pitiful $11 in tips, I was expected to “lie” and claim to the IRS I’d made $27 in tips since we are required to report 10% of our sales as tipped income…so basically I am now getting taxed on my subpoverty wages nearly 3X more than deserved. I find this to be a disgusting policy and very disregarding to the little guy who tries really hard but is underpaid/underappreciated.

The money here hasn’t been good for me…I can’t even keep up with basic bills like food and transportation costs let alone other bills. I make more money at my retail job, which is really saying something, since retail is infamous for not paying much. That, coupled with their horrific policy to make me lie about my income in my disfavor, are the reasons I’m quitting.

Just wanted to make a comment. We have always had a good experience at TGIF except for one time in Illinois. We spent the last two winters in Sun City,Az. There is a TGIF on Bell Road and 59th. There was a server there named Leon. One of the best we have ever had. If he is still there, go there and have a great experience.

I have noticed at a couple of restaurants that I go to; at the bottom of the bill they put how much a 15 per cent, 18 per cent and a 20 per cent tip would be for your bill. This is figured before taxes. It is programed into the computer. Maybe all restaurants should do this.

Tipping is ridiculous. Nobody tipped me to do my office job. Let the restuarant pay a decent wage and charge more for the meal.

Also, if you must have tipping, it should be a standard fee for a meal, not a percentage. If a waitress carries a plate with a lobster on it and another one carries a plate with a hamburger on it, why should you have to give the one carrying the lobster 3 times the tip, they are both doing the same amount of work.

What I think a lot of people don’t realize is often a server also has to tip out. In my case it’s three percent of my sales(before the coupon is added) this quickly adds up. $1000 in sales costs me $30. Most guests don’t factor in the coupon when leaving a tip. When a guest stiffs their server…. They end up paying to wait on that on that table Of course that can be very frusterating!

I agree, when I worked at Fridays I had to tip out my Busser, Bar Tender, and Food Runner…what really got me was the bar tender, if I had $1,000 dollars in sales for my shift I would have to give them 1.5% tip out which was $15 dollars!!!! tis is off of total food sales, I didn’t even sell one beer that day, but it was one of their rules, I also tiped the busser $15 and the food runner $5…for a total of $35 dollas in tip out that came from my hard earned tips, so for a 10hr shift, only $1,000 in sales and after tip out I made only $65 dollars thats only $6.50 per hour if people only tiped 10%….so I had to work my butt off to earn 20-30% off each table just to walk with any kind of money, some night I found myself tipping out $50 dollars of my money, us server are paying the wages of all the bussers, bar tenders, and food runners….so please remember that when you leave a tip, you are paying for 3 people, we dont keep all of the money, if we didn’t have to tip out, I would be fine with what ever my guest left me.

Reply to Killer Grog: just wanted to make myself clear, I was not demanding that you pay me 30%…I meant that I had to work my a$$ off to “Earn” 30% off each table to leave there with any money at the end of the night…people are free to leave what they want. My point was to tell people that to remember that your server does not keep all the money you give her (or him) eventhough that was “Our” hard earned money, we gave great service to knowing that they will come back and see us, not every server is a money hungry bi#ch, I hate the servers who think they can flash a smile and get a good tip, you need good service to bring them back in. Just one more thing to let you think about, I work 8Ohrs per check (bi-weekly) at $3.65 per hour and my check is most of the time only $8 dollars…I kid you not, I personally depend on only my tips to pay my bills. THANKS!

Its real simple! I eat at Fridays all the time and I love their food. You want a 25-30% tip from me (I know servers work hard), all I ask is keep my drinks refilled, make sure my food comes out at a decent time, and try not to screw the order up too much. I can deal with a little mishap here and there, but it annoys me when servers don’t write the order down and screw up, that’s inexcusable. Thank you.

I have to say that I am astounded at the hatred being spewed in these messages. Based on my experiences as a server 35 years ago (we were called waitresses in those days) I believe everyone should have to wait tables for at least 6 months. It would give them the perspective they need to behave better. My particular experience has led to my policy:

1. If I get my food, I leave 10%. (Yes, the education I earned on my own, wating tables, among other degrading jobs, allows me to easily do the math.) If I get good service I leave 20% — which is the overwhelming majority of the time.
2. My minimum is $2 per person. This covers low-end establishments where 20% is less than $2 per person.
3. Don’t PO the person who is preparing your food. It’s just not smart.
4. If you have an issue, address it with the manager. He/she is in the best position to determine who is responsible for the problem and how to get it fixed. Be nice about it — being a jackass serves nothing but your own ego.

I eat lunch out every week day at a competitor of Friday’s that is close to where I work (love Friday’s, but it’s across town). I have a guest everyday (which means I pick up the tab for both of us). I hate it when my guest insists on picking up the tab or paying for his/her own meal because 9 times out of 10 they leave a crappy tip, which leaves me to figure out how to compensate without my “date” seeing me.

At a restaurant like Friday’s the difference between a mediocre tip and a good tip is usually a dollar or two. I am absolutely sure that server needs the money more than I do, and a dollar or two just doesn’t mean that much to me. Yet I have seen successful businessmen stiff the servers time after time — over a buck or two which they can easily afford. (Anyone who can’t afford it, shouldn’t be eating out.)

What concerns me most about the posts on this site is that it is a glimpse into the cluelessness of the American people in general. IT’S NOT ABOUT YOU!! IT’S ABOUT US!! We’re all on the same train together. Try a little kindness, even when the other guy isn’t. What does it cost you?? A buck or two? Get over yourself.

Ever wonder why the Bible says the meek shall inherit the earth? Do you think it’s a reward from GOD for meekness? I don’t think so. I think it’s a natural outcome of the brutal, selfish, mean-spirited wiping each other out — only the meek will remain (and then only those that don’t get caught in the cross-fire).

Having been born with a personality that is anything but meek, it has taken me many years to come to terms with my place in the world, and as much as I hate it, IT’S NOT ABOUT ME! Take a chill pill, look for the place where you can leave a positive mark and give your server a decent tip for heaven’s sake!!

TIPS=To Insure Proper Service.

As a general rule i leave a 15% tip. I tip on the dinner total before the coupon is taken off. It seems to me it would be fair not to include whatever is taken off the bill. On the other hand i don’t tip on the tax associated with the bill. If i get good service (judgement call) i will leave 20%.

Those that complain about the tips they receive, all i can say is you have to accept the choice that you made when you accepted the job.

Happy New Year

I have been either a server or bartender for the last decade as a second job, and I love it. I will admit that I get extremely overpaid. I bartend for about 5 hours in my shift, and I bring home no less than $100 in tips on a normal shift. That is $20 an hour for opening beer bottles and mixing alcohol. Honestly? I don’t deserve that much….glad that I get it though. My whole thing about whiney servers is that you have to take the good with the bad. Yes, there are going to be some crappy tips, but there are also always some really good tips that will make it a happy medium. Most servers are college students that if they worked anywhere else would prolly be making under $10 an hour…..so you are still making out…..stop crying. If you make $150 on Friday and again Saturday, you are already making more than most 9-5 people. Not to mention, the whole percentage of the bill thing is crap. What is the difference if someone gets a burger for $8, or a steak for $20? The same size plate and service is being provided, so why should the server get a bigger tip? I always tip between 15-20% just because its what you are supposed to do, but I don’t necessarily agree with it.

I deliver pizza… I hate when I have to make a round trip to deliver a pizza that takes 25 minutes, and the people don’t tip. I don’t bitch about it, I smile and say ‘have a nice day.’ You can’t judge people. It’s THEIR money to decide if they want to tip or not. Yes, it sucks, but bitching about it does no good. And no, I don’t get that ‘delivery fee’ and Yes, I make LESS than the minimum wage as I am considered a ‘tipped employee.’ Yes, I do work only 23 hours a week, and I make more money than any 40 hour Job I have had. I made more last week in tips + base than my manager does in his workweek. Some days are better than others.

Hmmm, I worked at Logan’s for a year and a half and delivered pizzas for Pizza Hut for a few years and never had problems making tips. Sure some didn’t tip good, but others tipped much more then to make up for the slackers. If you are friendly, like your job and give good service you will make good money, period! If you don’t like your job or have a bad attitude or get so worked up over someone who doesn’t tip right, it comes across while you are doing your job and will affect your performance. Basic tips to servers, smile a lot, keep my glass full, don’t disappear for more then a minute, and walk past your tables frequently enough that if your customers need something you are always near by to obtain it from.

I happen to be a server at Friday’s now. It isn’t a terrible job but it is not fun either. Like it has been previously said we are forced to pay 103% of our total sales at the end of the night. If nobody left a tip(like some people have been saying) we would actually have to pay to work a night. I have actually had a shift (a wednesday dayshift) that I had to give my company money because a party of 6 with a 200 dollar bill did not leave me a thing and it was the only table I had all afternoon since they were taking up 2 out of my 3 tables and nobody else who entered the establishment wanted to sit next to them. I am working in an Urban area so we do not expect 20% in tips on checks…..we are enthralled if we actually happen to get 15%tip on a bill. People leaving bad tips leads to the guests(you) getting worse service. When servers get bad tips the management needs to give them a bigger section in order for the servers to actually make any money. So instead of you getting 1/3 of your servers time if they have 3 tables you will only be getting 1/5 of your servers time when they need to have a 5 table section just to pay bills. People please don’t tell me to get a better job I have a BA in CJ and am on every waiting list for every PD within two hours of where I live.
P.S Servers have great memories(at least the good ones do) so if you tip them well once you will get great service every time you go to that establishment.
