Today is Free Shipping Day and more than 200 retailers have banded together to offer free shipping on orders placed today with guaranteed delivery by December 24. This list includes Toys R Us, Target, JCPenney and Nordstrom, among others.

This has really been the year of free shipping. Honestly, this holiday seasion I’ve come to expect nothing less. I’ve been happy to see lower minimum purchase thresholds too, so for example, JC Penney and Barnes & Noble both require a $25 purchase and Toys R Us requires only a $49 purchase to get free shipping.

I’ve also noticed later deadline dates to get purchases by December 24 and free two-day shipping. Victoria’s Secret and Crate & Barrel both let you order by December 22 with free expedited shipping and guaranteed Christmas Eve delivery. Victoria’s Secret shoppers, use promo code SHIPFAST.

Planning to do some serious online shopping today? Here are my three quick tips:

Shop around. Check out a comparison shopping site like PriceGrabber or AOL Shopping to find the best price for the camera or mp3 player you might have your eye on. Enter your zip code and the site tallies applicable taxes and shipping so you can compare apples-to-apples.

Use online coupons. Before you make any purchase, head to RetailMeNot.com to hunt for coupon codes to net you 20% off or more on your purchase. You can also find free shipping codes there.

Shop on a cash-back site. I’ve done all my online shopping this year on a site called Ebates. What’s great about this site is that you shop all the stores you normally would, like Target.com and Walmart.com, and get back anywhere from 2-20% or more. Plus, you get $5 cash or a $10 gift card just for signing up.

Got any other great plans or strategies for Free Shipping Day? I’d love to hear them!
